Wuthering Heights
start
The Setting
Trushcross Range
Wuthering Heights
a peaceful house. it is often seen in opposition as it stands for civilization and better social background
a Place in the British Moor, often plunged in adverse weather conditions
Wuthering Heights
is the house of Catherine, Hindley and Heathcliff
It represents not only a physical place but also a state of mind. It somehow expresses the extension of Heatcliff behaviour: a tormented place where the main character experiments moment of deep pleasure and extreme stress.
Characters
THe Characters of the Novel
- Heathcliff
- Catherine Earnshaw
- Edgar Linton - Hindley Earnshaw
- Mr Lockwood - Nelly Dean: the two narrators
Heathcliff
he is seen as a primitive,a savage
- Heathcliff is represented by dry cliffs
- he is untamed, fearless but deeply tormented by a Love that he cannot express in a convenient way. His love is too big and strong that often comes out in the worst way.
- He is a rebel, immoral. He has a diabolic charme (Byronic Hero)
- People call him Afreet or Ghoul - which are Satanic kinds of forces
- He was brought in WH by Mr Earnshaw
- He was treated by his stepbrother as a slave
- the reader doesn't know anything about his previous life
- He has only one name, not even a surname- this was seen by some critics as a sign of social inferiority
Romantic and Gothic
- This Novel is Romantic for its way to deal with feelings which are strictly connected with the landscape and Nature
- Gothic is also a decisive element: Heathcliff is divided in two souls - from one side he is really realistic and sensible - the way he speaks, how he plans to revenge the abuse he coped with; but in another way he is deeply misterious, supernatural and irrational (he digs Cathy coffin and he chooses his own death.)
- The Gothic elements give the emotional force to the plot but at the same time the novel encompasses all the realistic features that seize the reader as if all the events could be true
Innovation
Inner Personality
Catherine and Heathcliff show off a deep sensitivity and emotional world, signs of awareness of circumstances and people around them but also of an inner conscoiussness of their own feelings. Their personalities are well outlined by the writer - forrunner of the early 20th century novels.

Love
He's more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.
Dichotomy between sensual and spiritual forces - which doesn't only imply LOVE between two people Iti is seen as irrepressible love, but also fraternal - conjugal - universal: it is a power that deconstruct the negative dynamics of the world. It is a an uncontextualized feeling that goes beyond human laws and social approval. (NELLY can't undersand what CAth says) Tension SALVATION and DAMNATION - the human being can't recognize himself in the society due to his consciousness so he lives as an OUTSIDER (HeathCliff)
+info
My love for Linton is like the foliage in the woods: time will change it, I’m well aware, as winter changes the trees. My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath: a source of little visible delight, but necessary. Nelly, I am Heathcliff!’
Absolute Love
It leads to the physical devastation of the Character (Catherine and Heathcliff) - who is psycologically tormented.
CORRELATIVO OGGETTIVO insuperable love - Nature is the outtcome of inner storms of the characters.
It has two faces: it gives new life but at the same time it destroys all the balance. It's a tectonic love which produces earthquakes
