Relative clauses

Defining and non - defining

Defining relative clauses give essential information to define or identify the person or thing we are talking about. No commas.

  • A dishwasher is a machine which/that washes dishes.
  • This is a girl who/that I met yesterday.
  • Do you know the girls who/that are talking to Pete?
  • It was the most gripping book which/that I`ve ever read.
  • That`s the man whose car has been stolen.
  • This is he place where we kissed for the first time.

Can we omit who/which/that?

Yes, we can :) but ... only if we put a personal pronoun or a noun afterwards.

  • This is the note (which/that) I found yesterday.
  • Joaquin Phoenix is the actor (who/that) he likes best.

Non-defining relative clauses

non-defining relative clauses tell us more about someone or something, but the information in these clauses does not help us to define what we are talking about. We use commas.

  • My coat, which I bought last winter, is too big for me now.
  • She was rude and arrogant, which I didn`t like at all.
  • My friend Mike, who is getting married in July, lives in Scotland.
