Civil War: Timeline
The south wants to leave the Union
April 1861
The South claimed the right to leave the United States and form its own confederacy. President Lincoln led the Northern States. He was determined to stop the rebellion and keep the country united. This event is important because its was the start of the Civil War.
Bloodiest Day of the war
Sept. 17 1862
The armies of the South and the North met at Antietam Creek in Maryland. The Confederate Army (South), led by Robert E. Lee, failed to force back The Union troops led by George McClellan. This event was important because the Confederacy was going to have the political support of Britain and France. However, they delayed and The South didn’t receive the help they needed.
Emancipation Proclamation
The president Lincoln issued a preliminary Emancipation Proclamation that freed all slaves in the South. It also allowed African Americans into the Union Army. This was important because the African American could fight for their freedom and to keep the Union together.

Scorched-earth policy
Gen. William T. Sherman left a path of destruction (known as the scorched-earth policy) as his army marched across Georgia and South Carolina. This was important because this helped the North to win important battles.

Abraham Lincoln’s death

Andrew Johnson becomes president
Andrew Johnson became the president of the United States. Andrew was a southerner. He gave pardons to many Southerners, which give them back their political rights. This was important because it destroyed the meaning of the civil war, the fight of the country to abolish slavery.

Slavery continues
The majority of the former Confederate States (the people of the South) canceled the acts of secession (separation from the country). However, they refused to abolish slavery. Only Tennessee gave full citizenship to African American men.

Oath of loyalty
The Republicans didn’t let rebel leaders govern. The Union blocked the people from voting, if they didn’t take an oath of loyalty to the Union. To the congress the rights of the African Americans were important and strongly supported. This is a significant event because they guaranteed important to the African American.

Changes in the Southern states
The House of Representatives tried to impeached president Johnson, but the senate was one vote shorter of the two-thirds majority required to remove Johnson from office. The Southern couldn’t send their representatives until they change their laws, barring slavery, conceding equal protection of the law to all citizens and finally allowing to all men citizen vote. This event is important because its meant to a strictly changes their laws to protect and respect all the people.
