difference between cardinal and ordinal numbers

quote

diferenCE between cardinalS and ordinalS numbers:

cardinal numers:

EXAMPLES:

how many triangles do I have on each line?

Cardinal numbers tell ‘how many’ of something, they show quantity. how to use cardinal numbers! How many eyes do you have? You have ‘two’ eyes. We use cardinal numbers for counting (think cardinal = counting). in other words, cardinal numbers answer “How many?”

ordinal numbers:

The numbers which give us the exact position of an object are called ordinal numbers. Ordinal numbers tell the position of an object rather than their quantity. Ordinal numbers all use a suffix and they are: -nd, -rd, -st, or -th. Examples: ‘second’ (2nd), ‘third’ (3rd), ‘first’ (1st), and ‘tenth’ (10th). We use ordinal numbers for dates and the order of something (think ordinal = order).

EXAMPLES:

  • ‘January 15, 2013’. If we were to say this date it would be: ‘January fifteenth, twenty-thirteen’.

examples:

1. The given picture shows different floors in a building. We can use ordinal numbers to define their position. The numbers 1st(First), 2nd(Second), 3rd(Third), 4th(Fourth), th(Fifth), 6th(Sixth), 7th(Seventh), 8th(Eighth), 9th(Ninth) and 10th(Tenth).

We can use ordinal numbers to define their position.
