The aim of this lesson is teaching students about different work and career opportunities they may wish to pursue when they graduate from high school. This lesson will provide students the support to understand the process of choosing a career field, meeting the requirements of their chosen career, and applying for a job.

If you were looking for a job, where would you go or what would you do?

Recruitment ads

Recruitment ads specify information about the position available, including the responsibilities and tasks, They state the qualities they are looking for in a candidate, such as experience, skills and qualifications.

Reading Comprehension

1- Lauren Grey graduated two months ago from Warwick University and is looking for her first full-time job. She is very ambitious and is looking for a position with career opportunities.2- Mary Steeler wants to find a part-time job now that her children are at school. She previously worked in sales and has a degree in French. 3- Vijay Patel has just been made redundant. He has worked in IT for 8 years and has gained considerable experience in hardware and software administration. 4- Jonathan Pierce wants to further his career away from his home town of Sheffield. He is very familiar with all the most common software packages and his working methods are very precise and methodical. 5- Jemma Brodowski loves working alone. Her current job is very stressful so she is looking for something less demanding. She does not want to work at the weekends.

This lesson plan introduces the resume and the cover letter basics. It encourages students to think about their own educational and work experiences and create their own resumes. Throughout the lesson, discussion questions are presented to build on prior knowledge and extend student learning.

How to write a CV

A Curriculum VItae is a brief summary of facts about you and your qualifications, work history, skills and experience.It is essential to have a good CV when applying for a job as it is your chance to be selected for an interview.

Your CV should be:

  • printed on white paper
  • no more than 2 or 3 sides
  • clear and correct
  • positive and make a good impression, emphasising your strenghts and successes
  • adapted to suit the specific job profile

  • After reading and analysing the different types of CV, check and say whether they follow all the advices and rules given on the previous slide and if there are mistakes.
  • Choose one of the CVs and explain the reasons why you think it is better than the other two.
  • Choose the correct option to complete these sentences from the personal profile section of some CVs.

How to write a cover letter

In addition to a well presented Cv, it is vital to have an excellent covering letter, since it is the first contact with a potential employer.It follows the basic structure of a business letter. It should be fairly short with a clear layout, no typos or errors.

Read the cover letter and analyse its structureHomework activity: Write a cover letter to a company you would like to work for. Use these points to help you:

  • you saw the company site
  • you are interested in a position in international sales department
  • you have a good knowledge of English and Chinese
  • you have three years experience in the same sector

In this lesson, you will learn how to be successful at a job interview. Students will examine how to dress, what body language to use and how to ask and answer questions at a job interview.
