What cause the Bawean Deer to be critically endangered?
What can we do to help the Bawean Deer and other living things in the area?
What is Bawean Deer? What does the Bawean Deer look like?
Bawean Deer🦌Rusa Bawean
Bawean hog deer or Hyelaphus kuhlii is a cousin of the hog deer. They are brown colored and have shorter legs than other deers.
Prior Knowledge🦌
- Bawean deer can only be found in Bawean Island
- They are herbivores
- Some predators of the Bawean deer are pythons and crocodiles
Ecosystem🦌
The Bawean hog Deer species can only be found in Indonesia at the island of Bawean off the Northern coast of East Java. The deer live in forests in two remote parts of the island. The central mountain range and Mount Bulu in the south west. Those two parts of the island are used by Bawean deer and have been since around the 1990s.
Adaptation🦌
The Bawean deer usually live in groups of 4-5, 2 male deer, 1 female deer, and the babies. Male deer who are usually the leader, are very protective towards their family. They become very aggressive towards any other male deers who come close to it’s small family. Male deers use their antlers to fight off other deers if necessary. When running from a predator, the Bawean deer has a strategy. The two male deer would run in front followed by the babies (if there are) and the female would run in the back. This is so that the male deers can protect the infant and lead the way. When running, Bawean deer carries its head low and curves their spines up.
Diet/Feeding🦌
The Bawean Deer are herbivores and eat grass and herbs around the forest. Other than grass and herbs, they also eat young leaves and twigs.
Threat🦌
Bawean deer is a critically endangered species. They are losing their habitat due to many people cutting down trees and making their already small wild habitat even smaller. People are taking up space to make houses and to make space for farms which force the deers to move. If this keeps on going, there will eventually be no more space for the Bawean deer. Another threat is uncontrolled hunting. People hunt these poor deers to sell for profit. But now there are fewer deers getting hunted. But since us humans keep cutting down trees and reducing their habitat, it hardly makes a difference. They have less space to live and not that much food to live off of. Since cutting down trees can cause climate change, it will also affect other problems which leads to even bigger issues.
