Today we'll focus on Second and Third conditional!

Second conditional: when do we use it?

We use the second conditional to talk about an improbable or hypothetical situation and its consequence. So, we refer to actions in the present/future that are unlikely to happen.

Second conditional rules: how do we form it?

The second conditional is formed by the past simple and would+ the base form of the verb. Condition: if +past simple + result: would+base verb If i was rich + I would live in a Castle We use the Past Simple tense to talk about the future condition. We use would + base verb to talk about the future result. The important thing about the second conditional is that there is an unreal possibility that the condition will happen.

Hypothetical/Improbable situations

• If I knew his phone number, I would call him!
• I would call him if I knew his phone number!

• If it snowed next July, what would you do?
• What would you do if it snowed next July?

• Remember that sometimes, we can also use could or might instead of would:
• If I won the lottery, I could stop working!
• If you asked George,he might be able to help you!

THIRD CONDITIONAL: WHEN DO WE USE IT?

We use the third conditional to talk about the past. We talk about a condition in the past that did not happen. That is why there is no possibility for this condition. The third conditional is also like a dream, but with no possibility of the dream coming true. ''If I had won the lottery, I would have bought a new car!''

Third conditional: how do we form it?

The third conditional is formed by:Condition: If+ Past Perfect + Result: would have + past participle ''If I had studied Japanese + I would have lived in Japan!'' We use the Past Perfect tense to talk about the impossible past condition. We use ''would have + past participle'', to talk about the impossible past result.

Examples:

• You would have passed your exam if you had worked harder. OR
• If you had worked harder, you would have passed your exam

• If it had rained, you would have gotten wet OR
• You would have gotten wet if it had rained.
