what is pronunciation?

Definition: Pronunciation is learnt by repeating sounds and correcting them when produced inaccurately. When learners start learning pronunciation the make new habits and overcome the difficulties resulting from first language.Cook /1996 as cited in Pourhosein Gilakjani./

Pronunciation is the production of a sound system which doesnt interfere with communication either from the speakers or the listeners./Paulston and Burder, 1976/

Goal of pronunciation

The goal of teaching pronunciation is not to teach learners to achieve a perfect imitation of a native accent, but simply to get they learners to pronouns accurately enough to be easily and comfortably comprehensible to other speakers.

Teaching pronuncation techniques

Chaining

Drilling

In this activity the teacher isolates certain parts of the sentence, model them for students to repeat, and gradually build the sentence up until it is complete.

It involves the teacher saying a word or a structure, and having the class to repeat it.

Eliciting

Minimal pairs

Teacher uses a variety of prompts pictures, miming, gestures etc. to encourage students to bring up previously studied words, phrases or structures.

These are used for focusing on sounds that cause difficulties for the students.
