How English became a lingua franca

North Sea Germanic people including Angles, Saxons, Jutes, and Frisians settle in Britain, bringing with them the dialects that become Old English.

Led by William the Conqueror, Normans, Bretons, and Frenchmen invaded England and established themselves as the ruling class.

As a result of the Norman conquest, French words began to enter English, including those regarding royalty, the law, and food items.

The Great Vowel Shift occurs, affecting all dialects of English (though in different ways).

In 1800 It just started the Transition to Modern English.

English continues to spread through media such as Hollywood films, popular music, and the technology.

Process of English around the world

Vikings invaded the eastern and northern past of England. They brought a large of number of words to the English language.

In 1150 it was the transition to Middle English.

In 1480 It was just started the Transition to Early Modern English.

Large-scale migration from England to North America leads to a new strain of English evolving there.

English spreads across the world as a result of the British Empire.
