Keeping Our Kids Safe
Internet Safety, Password Safety, and Filtering
By: Katie Galgay
Are we doing enough?
Discuss the following questions at your table
Do our students know how to create safe passwords?
What are the benefits of filtering websites?
Do our students know the risks of the internet?
(National Online Safety, 2018)
Our Vision
Children must be taught the benefits of the internet first and foremost, but also to use it with respect and responsibility. They need to engage with the internet, find it interesting, fun and exciting. Consequently, they need to develop an appropriate set of skills and understanding through developing digital citizenship (Livingstone, 2019).
Internet Safety
Technology is part of our students' everyday lives, so safety NEEDS to be a priority at Hannah Martin.
Our students need to know about.... PERMANANCY ACCESS FRAUD, SCAMS, and PHISHING
NOT everything on the internet it true. NOT all people are who they say they are.
ONCE information is posted online, it is ALWAYS there and can ALWAYS be found.
ANYONE can access information about them on the internet.
(Panda Security, 2018)
Password Safety
As students start to engage with more technology from more sources, it's important for them to start thinking about how to protect their information. While students are likely still using teacher created accounts, they need to understand the need for good passwords with all of the accounts the will end up using in and out of school.
TIPS FOR SUCCESS
Don't use personal information. (name, age, birthdate)
Use Special Characters (capital letters, symbols, numbers)
Use different passwords. This keeps all accounts safe
(Ankucic, 2019)
Why Filter Websites?
Internet filtering is very essential when it comes to jamming certain web pages and some web content that is not suitable for viewing.
It blocks inappropriate websites and information from being viewed, forcing students in being responsible
It allows students to be more focussed, which causes productivity to increase
It protects devices from viruses and prevents accessive dowloading and uploading
(TechPrate, 2019)
