Electricity Production and the Environment

Save your planet!

INTRODUCTION

CHARACTERS

MISSIONS

can you save your planet?

Global warming is the long-term heating of Earth's climate system observed since the pre-industrial period (between 1850 and 1900) due to human activities. The primary activity contributing to global warming is the burning of fossil fuels, which increases heat-trapping greenhouse gas levels in Earth's atmosphere. The effects are felt now, even in Canada. How can we slow this effect down and reverse its course? Travel through time to find the clues. You will need to be creative with the letters to get the answer.

What are the most commoN non-renewable resources?

earth's crust

fossil fuels

Electricity

Back to the present

correct!!

fossil fuels include coal, crude oil and petroleum. products created from fossil fuels include gasoline, jet fuel, diesel and asphalt. they are a key ingredient in many materials such as plastic and a key component in the production of electricity.

Back to the present

what are fossil fuels made of?

soil under intense pressure

buried plants and animals

dinosaur fossils

Back to the present

correct!!

fossil fuels are made from more than just dinosaurs. they are formed from fossilized and buried remains of plants and animals that are exposed to heat and pressure for over hundreds of millions of years in the earth's crust.

which chart represents annual world carbon dioxide emissions

emissions from burning of fossil fuels and cememt production (from 1790/1800 to 2019) in linear scale

credit: ourworldindata.org - source: Global Carbon Project; CDIAC

Back to the present

correct!!

The first chart is a logrithmic representation (scale goes up 10 times for each y-axis unit). the second chart is for the united states only. the u.s. have made progress with renewable and alternative energies in recent years. the third chart is for the entire world.

what is an impact of increasing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions?

increase coastal erosion rates

lower sea levels

more earthquakes

Back to the present

correct!!

impacts of higher GHG emissions include:

  • a rise in average annual temperature
  • A DECREASE IN snow, sea ice and glacier coverage
  • rising sea levels and coastal erosion rates
  • increaseD frequency and severity of heat waves, resulting in higher risks of forest fires
  • many TYPES OF wildlife have difficulty adapting to warmer climate
earthquakes usually occur when there is a sudden release of stress along faults in the earth's crust and ARE not directly impacted by ghg emissions.

Electric Lighting from coal

correct - incandescent light bulbs are very inefficient and lose 85% of energy in the form of heat. switching to LED lights can reduce energy usage by up to 80%.

which of these is not a by-product of producing electricity from coal?

alberta is windy

southern alberta is one of the windiest places in canada. it gets so much wind due to the position of the jet stream which is also influenced by the downslope winds along the rocky mountains.

what is common between hot springs and oil and gas wells?

both are clear access points to harvest geothermal energy. banff and jasper hot springs are just a few places in alberta where hot spring water flows. suspended oil and gas wells can be used to access the heat deep below the earth's surface or we canuse the hot water from producing wells for heating or electricty producton.

alberta is land locked but still has opportunities for hydro!

in a 2010 hatch report, it is estimated that only 4% of alberta's total hydro energy potential is being used. due to large upfront capital costs, location challenges and environmental issues, natural gas and coal are more profitable options. however, with a focus on ghg emissions, things may change in the near future.
