Born in White Sulfur Springs, West Virginia on August 26, 1918. As an African American woman, she and her family faced segregation and Jim Crow laws; public education for African American children ran through the eighth grade.
President Barack Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civil decoration an American can receive in 2015.
