It was founded in 1941 by Carl Karcher and owns CKE Restaurants. Its biggest competitions are McDonald's and Burger King.

Karcher acquired an independent restaurant in Anaheim, California called Carl's Drive-In Barbeque. In 1956, Karcher opened Carl's Jr.'s first two restaurants; named after Karcher himself as he considered them the "sons" of his first restaurant.
