Definition of this axe
From time immemorial, societies have fashioned informal and formal public and private spaces in their settlements. Public and private spaces can be defined in two different ways. The first one is from a geographic point of view. According to Social Language, Digital Media, “a public space is a social space that is generally open and accessible to all citizens, for their use and enjoyment” such as roads or parks. On the contrary, a private place is open to those permitted by law or custom : a house, garden, apartment or building a person is living in would be considered as a private space. It is important as well as public spaces. Indeed, urban sociologists recognize that public spaces serve as a setting for community activities or public life, for example, parades, meetings, and informal gatherings. Indeed, the second definition of public and private spaces is from a psychological point of view. “Private space is the region surrounding a person which they regard as psychologically theirs”. That is, some people might have different definitions of their private space, depending on their personality : a more reserved person might have a shorter private space for example. According to that definition, a public space is thus “reserved for speeches, lectures, theatres, […] larger audiences”, in other words, for public life. Having a private and a public sphere is vital for everyone’s emancipation and freedom. But these spheres do not have clear boundaries with each other. On the contrary, they impinge constantly on their respective territories. We can think about activities confusing private and public spaces : for example, when we receive guests at home, our private space opens up on the public sphere. Therefore, in this axe, several aspects can be evoked like the question of the borders between private and public spaces, how it changes depending on times, situations, cultures, values, people and how it becomes indistinguishable today in our increasingly global world. We can also wonder how people are different between their private and public spaces, to what extent our private spaces are “private”, if it can be interesting to show parts of our private life, to what extent public spaces are “public” (if everyone can access to public sphere...), if our private space that protects ourselves from the public area in every sense of the word (ex. : lockdown) is to prioritize compared to our public space ... To this end, many social phenomenons can be studied.

Questions raised by this axe
How are the boundaries between the private and public sphere influenced by different cultures, beliefs and traditions ? How has this evolved over time ?
How is society affected by the boundary between the public and private sphere (relegation of women to the private sphere, how the emancipation of women and their entry into the public sphere is still an urgent issue, how this affects gender roles) ?
How are other aspects of private and public spheres changing (family, work, language (different registers, formal/informal, …)) ?

POTUS and FLOTUS
Clinton
The White House, a private house ?
Link with the axe :
Most Americans want FLOTUS and POTUS’s private lives to be public and completely transparent in order to be able to trust them and check if they are “clean” for the country’s public image. For example, when Bill Cliton’s private affair with another woman had become public, it has been prejudiciable for his career and his public image. Indeed, some FLOTUS and POTUS suffer not to have any private life. This is the case for Hillary Clinton that decided not to run for president again in order to protect her private life (family and friends). However, she was at the time also balanced with her public life : she wanted to do the best choice for her country as well. This is the reason why, some FLOTUS and POTUS tried to find a balance between their private and public life. They aptly use their private life to support their public image, for example by spreading posing pictures of themselves or their family, or by opening White House’s doors for charity like Michelle Obama.

The case of the preppers
The link between survivalism and private and public spaces can be understood in two different ways. In the first one, the demarcation between private space and public space is perfectly clear and even visible. Indeed, for preppers, the core of their facility constitutes their private space that represents safety and protection, the outside constitutes their public space that represents danger, and their bunker represents the vital border between the two. In such a situation, private and public spaces are absolutely separated in order to survive every disaster : it is what preppers believe. Personally speaking, I think that this conviction can be prejudiciable for them. Indeed, it’s essential to overcome one’s fears. If not, we may become paranoiac and isolated from society. In the second link, survivalism illustrates the blurring frontier between public and private spaces. In fact, if the world became apocalyptic after a major cataclysm or disaster, either preppers would confine themselves in a forteresse with a survivalist community or non-preppers would wander and try to survive, their houses having been destroyed. In such a situation, the line between public and private space is blurred. Talking about private property is pointless : what matters here is to survive.
