Massachusetts bay

By the late 1620s, the persucution of dissenters in England was increasing. in 1629, King Charles I issued a charter for the formation of Massachusetts Bay Company, a joint-stock company composed of Puritan businessmen.

"A city upon a hill"

Like the Pilgrims, the Puritans came to New England to enjoy freedom from religious persecution. In Governor Winthrop's most famoius words, they wished to be "a city upon a hill," an example to the world.

Character and Education

The success of the Massachusetts Bay colony was due largely to the character of her people, who were deeply rooting in the teachings of the Bible.

The evangelization of the Indians in New England had been a lonstanding goal among English settlers. Like the charter of Plymouth colony, the charter of Massachusetts Bay set forth the goal of winning natives for God.

They believed government should protect private property, and they beleived in the principles of limited government and of individual participation in government. Another impostant part id the Puritan work ethic, the belied that (1) man is called to work, (2) all work has a sense of nobility, and (3) a Christian serves God by working diligently in his calling.
