USED TO

USE, STRUCTURE AND PRACTICE

WHEN DO WE USE 'USED TO'?

In my previous job, I used to teach English to teenagers.

Take a look at the verbs that are included in the sentence. How many verbs are being used?In what tense are they being used? What do you think the sentence translation will mean?

Used to

Refers to..

How certain actions were done in the past, they show change. Before Covid, I used to take the bus to go to school. I used to go swimming in the mornings. When I lived downtown, I used to go to the movies once a week at night and I used to walk to work.

Structure

Since it is a verb in past, its form doesn't change depending on the subject. It needs to be followed by the preposition TO and due to this the following form needs to be written in its infinitive form (present).

Practice

You will complete the phrases with examples of what you USED to do.. at that time in specific.

1. When I was six years old...2. Before entering college... 3. Before Covid...4. When I was 17...5. When I was with my friends...

STRUCTURE

FROM PAST SIMPLE TO PAST PERFECT

We use it to report what people said in the past:

  • The tense of the verbs changes.
  • The pronouns change (if necessary).
  • Sometimes we use THAT after said, but not always.
A. I lost my bag and all my money and belongings. B. She said she had lost her bag and all her money and belongings. 1. We didn't finish our project so we failed the subject. 2. They said that they hadn't finished their project so they had failed the subject.

Practice

Write 5 different examples of past actions. Remember to include possessive pronouns. For example:

1. My mother bought a black car and then she changed it to white. 2. I forgot to bring the keys to my house. 3. One of my students won an English scholarship.
