• Computer system is made of both hardware and software.
• Hardware indicates all the physical components that make up a computer and it consists of both external and internal parts. Software refers to all the programs and data that allow a computer to operate and carry out a task.

Vocabulary

Carry out: to complete or to do something you said you would do!

Make up: this phrasal verb has different meanings such as invent a story, prepare something or assemble something. What is the most appropriate meaning in this context? "We often quarrel but we always make it up soon after."

If you were a computer, your thoughts would be software and your brain would be hardware!

Let's study hardware in details:

Hardware consists of both external and internal parts. 1-External parts (peripherals) refer to the basic functions of input, such as sending data to your PC, and output, that indicates the outcome produced by the computer as a result of the input process.

• 2- Internal parts (components) that indicate all the elements produced inside the computer case. These parts are: CPU, motherboard, memory chips, video and sound cards and the internal disk drive.

Hardware is also important because it performs 4 basic functions: Input- CPU- Output- Memory The relationship among these four elements is also called ''Von Neumann architecture''

• It refers to computer programs. We can make a distinction between System software and Application software.
• System software includes three important things such as: the operating system, driver and utility software.
• Application software is used to carry out tasks on a computer.

There are many different types of application software such as word processing, presentation software, modelling software (spreadsheets), databases, video editing and desktop publishing software,web browser and apps.
