Persepolis: Iran Time Line
1905: Consitutional Revolution which was nationalist uprsings against the shah in Persia (Iran)
1909: Creation of Anglo-Persian Oil Company (British Petroluem)
Mid 1960's - Late 1970's: The Shah’s progressively autocratic methods, continue to alienate large sectors of the population.
1918: World War 1 ends, Iran is ravaged by famine and epidemics.

Mid 1960's - 1970's
- Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela, found the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) - Shah embarks on a succession of economic, social, and administrative reforms, White Revolution - Shah's use of SAVAK + autocratic methods, alienate large sectors of the population - Marjane's parents are protestors at these demonstrations
1978
- religious and political opposition coalesces into mass riots, strikes, and demonstrations - Burning of Rex Cinema resulted in 400 deaths - Marjane & Mehri,attend a demonstration (Black Friday) --> SAVAK gun down hundreds of unarmed protesters who refuse to disperse.
1979
- Islamic Revolution begins - Shah and his family are forced into exile - Ayatollah Khomeini returns from exile + declared Supreme Leader of the newly established Islamic Republic of Iran (theocratic republic based on the Islamic faith) - factions divided, internationally isolated

- Iraq invaded Iran marking the beginning of the Iranian Revolution - Iraq, settle historical disputes concerning the boundary line of the Shatt al Arab river, (cuts across Shi’a Muslims, Arabs, Kurds with differing political loyalties) - incite Shi’a Muslims (the majority in Iraq) to similar notions of revolution
MID 1980's
- Iran and Iraq attack + counter attack continuously, neither side holding the advantage for long - Iraq, with aid from other nations in the Middle East, has superior weaponry, but Iran has greater numbers, sending in troops in “waves.” - Iranian fundamentalists also use the war effort to further eliminate domestic opposition to the new regime
1988
- Iran accepts the UN resolution, which calls for ceasefire of hostilities between Iran & Iraq - Marjane is currently in Austria
1990 - 1991
- Iran = neutral during Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, Iran and Iraq resume diplomatic ties - Marjane, now a student at the university in Tehran - Her friends = model citizens in public, giving the regime no excuse to harass them, but in private they are exuberant individuals, throwing parties nearly every night - One night, one friend falls to his death while trying to escape the Guardians of the Revolution.
1993
- Marjane she realizes that she cannot continue to live in such a society - After spending quality time with her loved ones, she leaves Iran once again, this time to France
2002 - 2003
- Iran begins construction on their first nuclear reactor, despite U.S. objections - Thousands attends student-led protests in Tehran against the regime. U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency conducts inspections in Iran - Iran confirms construction of nuclear power plants but insists they are to be used as a fuel source
