PAST SIMPLE

( In negative )

WHEN WE USE PAST SIMPLE

We use the Past Simple to talk about a PAST and FINISHED action at a certain moment or a period in the past:

  • A week/a month/ a year ago
  • Last year/month/week
  • Yesterday...
  • In...(past date)

Sentence order

The verb do in the past and negative is used to say that something did no happen in the past and it is written didn't.

This is how a sentence is ordered negatively.

Subject + didn't + verb + information

She didn't live here.

Examples:

You didn't play yesterday in the morning.

Ways to write negative "do" in past

The do in negative past can be written in two different ways:

Examples

Long form : Did not

Short form : Didn't

They did not win competition

They didn't win competition

Rules

1#. In the NEGATIVE form we use the auxiliary verb "to DO" at the past tense (DID) and the main verb goes in the past form (without "to"). We use the same form for regulars and irregulars verb.

2#. It didn't get because it says that something didn't happen in the past.

Rules

3#. In NEGATIVE sentences the verbs are not put in the past because the verb "didn't " is alreary in the past, so the verbs are put in the infinitive .

4#. All verbs have "didn't " less Was and Were

Phrases

You didn't help to your friends at the last class.

She didn't finish race.

I didn't arrive on time.

We didn't learn nothing in the camp.

He didn't stay in the park yesterday.
