Hello! How are you? I heard that you are studying Tourism Management, is it true?

Hey! I am doing alright, I hope everything is going well with you, too. Yes, I am studying tourism management, currently in the second year of the course.

That is amazing, I have been wondering what changes this pandemic will bring to tourism, and how tourists are going to react when they can travel abroad.

That is an interesting topic. Tourism, as know it, will be somewhat different after COVID-19. This pandemic has had different consequences depending on the country, several have decided to close borders to avoid spreading the virus more rapidly, however this decision has brought severe economic difficulties along with it.

Yes, I am aware of that. I had booked a trip to Italy last summer that I unfortunately had to postpone but quite honestly, I am not entirely sure if I would want to go anywhere right now, I would feel unsafe doing so.

Are you considering travelling to your own country instead?

That is exactly what I am planning to do. What is your opinion regarding this increase in domestic tourism?

Actually, I believe local experience and hometown tripping will be the next tourism trends, starting right this summer.

Oh, do you?

Yes, and it is extremely benefitial for both local stores and businesses.

Ohh, I see. If someone happened to book an hotel room somewhere else in their own country, they would end up spending money on local restaurants and souvenirs.

Precisely! You do not even have to stay there overnight, you can simply spend a whole day elsewhere and it will certainly help the local economy. Not only that, but it will help tourism not to stay stagnant, because people feel safer being in their own country.

Hmmm, so you are saying that local tourism and hometown tripping are bound to be the next tourism trends...

That feels comforting to know, I am now realizing that instead of just traveling abroad I can enjoy what my own country has to offer.

You should definitely do that, I have already booked my holidays to the north of Portugal, and I am incredibly excited.

Sounds like a plan, I appreciate your suggestions. They were useful, indeed. I will talk to you later!

It was a pleasure, I am glad I could help you. Perhaps, we could spend our holidays together this summer. See you soon!

Things you should know while visiting Portugal

If

you chose Portugal as your holiday destination you probably already know how rich this small country is in a cultural way and variety of places and activities to do, since practice snow sports or relax at the beach or spend the day visiting museums or just walking around the city. While visiting Portugal, you do not really need to worry about social etiquette, of course there are some situation or aspects you should be aware of, but everything’s pretty easy and very natural in Portugal. This country and the people are considered to other tourists a very friendly community.

GREETING A PORTUGUESE

When greeting a Portuguese that you never met before, it is appropriate to shake hands, considered a formal situation, this applies to men, women and older children. The handshake is accompanied by direct eye contact. If you already know this person or if you are friends, between men it is normal to embrace and pat one another on the back, between women kissing both cheeks is a very common practice.

COMMUNICATING WITH A PORTUGUESE

The communication style of a Portuguese tends to be direct, they will tell you the truth but in a polite way. As expected, and it is not only in Portugal, communication tends to be more on the formal side when in public and much less so in private. Portuguese people have a tendency to speak quite fast and somewhat loudly, this is a particular way to show emotions while speaking and it is a part of the Portuguese character, it does not mean anger or displeasure. Portuguese will appreciate if you learn a few words in his language, such as Hello “Olá” or good morning “bom dia”, thank you “obrigado” and goodbye “adeus”.

THE PORTUGUESES PERSONAL SPACE

As mentioned above, this is a very friendly country and community, so in terms of a personal space an arm’s length is usually the appropriate amount of personal space to hold during conversations. It is common to see people hugging in public, and couples kissing and women interlock arms with men while walking in the street.

THE PORTUGUESES DRESS CODE

The Portuguese dress code is considered a little bit conservative. In Business etiquette suits and ties for men, are the two things that you shouldn’t forget, for Women dresses, skirts, and jackets or trouser suits. When out of business, in a more casual situation, Portuguese people opt for a more casual look, jeans and t-shirts and a very common outfit.

My Thoughts

Section 1

Hi! My name is Cristiana, I´m twenty years old and I’m in the second year of a three years course of tourism management. Besides being a student, I have a part time job at my parent’s restaurant, it has been hard times during the last year. Due to covid-19, we had to close doors at the beginning of 2020 and then we adapted our restaurant service to be able to do take away and keep working.

The last year has been particularly hard for me, because I have been working in my family, it´s quite stressful, but the hardest thing to me, is being far away from the ones that I love, either family members or friends. Having online classes was also very hard for me to adapt, I didn’t know how to organize myself, when I should study or do work projects, or if I should take notes from the lessons or just listen to it, for all this reasons I end up having constantly anxiety episodes. It really messed me up to the point where I was doing school projects while crying or working till late at night to end my work on time.

However, going through all these episodes made me realize how I should face the school, by trying not to stress about every assignment or exam I have to do, it also showed me how I should or should not organize my study time, I started to use a weekly planner, where I wrote every deadline for the assignments on the present and next weeks, where I wrote how many hours I would study for each subject.

At that moment it helped me to organize my weeks and days, but sometimes I got frustrated when I couldn’t do everything I had planed for that day or week. Now, I´m no longer using weekly planner, instead I´m using monthly planner, this way I can have a better precession how that month will be and start work on the assignments with antecedence, avoiding more anxiety episodes during the most critical weeks of the semester.

Once again, it’s been hard not just for me but for both of us, but I´m sure we are not the only ones in this hard position. I have to confess that somedays I just want to lay down, hug my teddy bear that he gave me and cry. In order to deal with this feeling of missing see and hangout, we facetime almost every night until one of us falls asleep.

Otherwise, I start dating last summer, so not everything about this past year is bad, right? We are now dating for almost seven months and use dto see each other once a week, sometimes two because we live a little bit far away from each other, but we learn how to deal with that. And we are happy with that. Nevertheless, we don’t hang out since January, because we are all going through a new lockdown with no prediction when this is going to end.
