VERB + INFINITIVE
- After certain verbs we use infinitive. This is often to talk about hopes, intentions and decisions.
- Common verbs which are followed by infinitive include: agree, appear, arrange,choose, expect, decide, hope, intend, manage, need, offer, plan, prepare, pretend, promise, refuse, seem, want, wish, would like.
EXAMPLES
He offered to draw the plans for the development. They didn't want to work on the project anymore. The government managed to fix the streets.
VERB + SOMEONE +INFINITIVE
- Some verbs are followed by an object and infinitive.
- Common verbs which are followed by someone + infinitive include: allow, ask, expect, force, help, invite, like, need, remind, teach, tell, want, would like.
EXAMPLES
He reminded his employees to arrive early. They'd like the contractors to submit their proposal. The goverment invited the citizens to beautify their town.
VERB + SOMEONE + BASE FORM
- Some verbs are followed by an object and the base form.
- Common verbs which use this form are: feel, hear, help, notice see, watch.
We use verb + -ing after certain verbs.Common verbs which are followed by: avoid, can't help, like, love, enjoy, prefer, don't like, hate, can't stand, (not) mind, keep, miss, practice, risk, suggest, finish.
EXAMPLES
The architect suggested adding some green space. We enjoy watching the ocean view. They prefer buying a house with a big garden.
