An Article...

  • is a piece of writing usually intended for publication.
  • is written for a wide audience, so it is essential to attract the reader's attention.
  • can be formal or informal, depending on the target audience.
  • should be written in an interesting and entertaining manner.
  • should give opinions and thoughts, as well as facts.

  • describe an experience, event, person or place.
  • present an opinion or balanced argument.
  • compare and contrast.
  • provide information.
  • offer suggestions.
  • offer advice.

Before you begin writing it is important to consider:

  • where the article is going to appear (newspaper or magazine)
  • who are the intended readers?
  • what is the aim of the article: to advise, suggest, inform, compare and contrast, describe, etc?

These 3 points are the deciding factors in the layout, of your article, its style, language and level of formality. Determine the information you are going to use and organise it in paragraphs. Each paragraph should have a clear topic sentence.

How to Write an Article

An article should consist of: TITLE - Engage the reader. Catchy. Provocative. INTRODUCTION - Introduce topic. Engages the reader further. Usually poses a question to be answered at the end of the article. MAIN BODY - Develop ideas: e.g. positive and negative aspects. CONCLUSION - Give answer to previous question Give your opinion / point of view. Take sides.

  • Don't talk about yourself.
  • Be interesting:
  • Give your article a catchy title.
  • Start with a good opening.
  • Use precise vocabulary.
  • Suprise the reader.
  • Don't present rumours or guesses as if they were facts.

8 ways of opening an article

  • A surprising fact, perhaps including statistics.
  • A surprising, shocking or bizarre statement. The reader keeps reading out of curiosity.
  • A question. This helps define the subject of your article and encourages the reader to think about the subject.
  • A quotation.
  • A story that illustrates what you are going to say.
  • A definition of the topic. Although appropriate, this is the least interesting.
  • A description or image that evokes a suitable atmosphere or symbolises the whole question.
  • A reference to a well-known phrase from literature, a song, a proverb, etc.; an allusion.
