What is reading comprehension?
It is defined as the level of understanding about the content of a text, a paragraph or a book.
There are some techniques to help students to improve their reading skill which are:
1- New vocabulary2-Reading aloud and Reading comprehension 3-Introduce the theme of the text first 4-Follow up activities 5-Authentic material
New Vocabulary
Find key words from the reading
Do not pre-teach all the new vocabulary
Guess the meaning of new words
Pair your students up to work out meaning
These techniques will help our students develop critical thinking and increase pair work.
Reading aloud vs Reading comprehension
- Reading aloud is good when we want to check pronunciation, sentence stress or fluency . - Reading aloud can be done after reading comprehension tasks - Reading aloud is not reading comprehension
- Reading comprehension has a purpose to understand the content of text. - Reading comprehension is to pay attetion to the content. - Reading comprehension is reading for something.
These Teacniques will help our students to improve pronunciation and comprehend a text in an easier way.
Introduce the Theme of the Text First
This technique is focused to help our students to :
- Arouses student´s Interest-It helps to learn new vocabulary - Sets the mood for reading - Integrates speaking and listening to put into practice.
Follow-up Activities
This technique allows to teachers integrate other skills with reading skills for example:
2. Writing: Summarize a story or write a letter.
- Speaking: Debating or Discussion a story
we can catch the attention of our students by doing interest activities in order to have a meaningful learning for them
Authentic Material
- Authentic materials are more complex and difficult.- Using authentic material students learn real life and meaningful vocabulary. - It does not matter what is the level of your students authentic material can still use for all levels. - It can include Music lyrics, poetry, magazines, articles or newspaper articles.
Authentic Material make easier and simple any task for our student and it is important for teachers do not be afraid to use them because It helps to make understandable a task about reading comprehension.
