Understanding the speaker's attitude and mood.
People often GIVE CLUES about their attitude and mood when they're speaking. Pay attention to both verbal and nonverbal cues.
vERBAL CUES:
Opinion phrases that indicate a positive or negative attitude.
Words and phrases that indicate certainty
Or uncertainty
- Seem
- Appear
- Perhaps
- Maybe
- Definitely
- Absolutely
Words with positive
or negative connotation.
- serious
- unfortunate
- beneficial
- fortunately
- luckily
Clauses that indicate contrast:
- BUT
- WHILE
- DESPITE
- IN SPITE OF
Nonverbal cues:
Volume: Louder volume often indicates the speaker is confident about what they're saying.
Pitch:
A frequent or constant rising pitch can show the speaker is uncertain.
Tone of voice:
A positive attitude can be indicated by a happy voice and enthusiastic fillers such as haha and yeah. A negative attitude sounds hesitant and unenthusiastic with negative sounding fillers like erm, um, or huh, and sighs.
Speed:
When is Speaker slows down this can show speaker thinks the information is important
