Problem

Given

m = 8820N Speed = 35m/s Distance = 1100m a = ? ΣF = ?

The parachute on a race car that weighs 8820 N opens at the end of a quarter-mile run when the car is traveling 35 m/s. What net retarding force must be supplied by the parachute to stop the car in a distance of 1100 m?

The parachute on a race car that weighs 8820 N opens at the end of a quarter-mile run when the car is traveling 35 m/s. What net retarding force must be supplied by the parachute to stop the car in a distance of 1100 m?

Solution

a = velocity/timea = -35m/s ÷ 314.29s a = -0.11m/s²

m = 8820N ÷ 9.8m/s m = 900 kg

Given

m = 8820N Speed = 35m/s Distance = 1100m a = ? ΣF = ?

ΣF = ma ΣF = 900 kg (-0.11m/s²) ΣF = -99N

T = distance/speedT = 1100m ÷ 35m/s T = 314.29s

What net retarding force must be supplied by the parachute to stop the car in a distance of 1100 m?

ΣF = -99N
