GRAPHIC DESIGN

BACK

Graphic Design is the process of visual communication, and problem-solving through the use of type, space, image and color. Graphic Design is so much a part of everybody's life that at times it goes unnoticed. The layout of type and imagery on the page you are reading right now is a key aspect of graphic design.

DEFINITION

INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN

BACK

Graphic Design (the art of conveying messages) has always been a part of humanity, even as far back as the early cave paintings of approximately 16,000 years ago. Scenes of the hunt may have been more than merely decorative, possibly serving a number of purposes. Today, digital printing and electronic media have replaced cave wall paintings, mosaics, and woodcuts. But the functional aspect of graphic design is the same—to educate, symbolize, and even compel people to action.

BACKGROUND

GRAPHIC DESIGN

BACK

Design has a profound impact on how users perceive information and learn, judge credibility and usability, and ultimately assign value to experience of interacting with certain material. To apply a graphic design effectively, it is important to understand the elements and principles of design which underpin good visual design. In no time, we will show the basic elements to be taken into account, and it does not require you to be a professional graphic designer. Then, we will propose tips for you to put into practice in this module.

Aspects to consider

Implications for Design

Its value consists of reinforcing and contributing to the learning and internalization of the knowledge, values and behaviors that, simultaneously, are communicated through other semantic forms.

A communicative resource, graphic or animated, that repeatedly conveys the central educational message of the didactic material.

It must be planned from design stages. A good metaphor guides the production of the material and covers all areas of it, since it helps to meet the objectives of the material.

Pedagogical Metaphor

A collection of rules and guidelines which designers use to communicate with users through appealing color schemes in visual interfaces.

To pick the best colors every time, designers use a color wheel and refer to extensive collected knowledge about human optical ability, psychology, culture and more.

The colors must reflect the goal and "personality" of the material. It should also be applied color theory to optimize a positive psychological impact on users.

Implications for Design

Aspects to consider

In terms of design, images help create a connection with the text and can clarify the information presented in a layout by adding meaning and evoking associations.

Images are highly effective communication tools, whether they are of real objects, people or places, or more abstract.

A representation of visual information, such as drawings, pictures, graphs, logos, icons, individual video frames, etc..

Images

The most effective font choices translate the purpose of the design. The right font will speak in the language of the target audience.

A design, or selection, of letter forms to be organized into words and sentences to be disposed in blocks of type in a material.

The typeface should represent the style expected by the audience for which the design is intended.

The selection of the the pedagogical metaphor is one of the first steps of the graphic design of the educational material. This communication resource will be as an image or animated. To do this, you must study carefully the characteristics of the target audience, as well as the objective and contents of the material, so that the pedagogical metaphor is a constant communicative resource in the different sections and that allows the user to be identified with the educational material.

Choosing the right colors is vital to catching users’ attention in the first place. The vibrancy you choose for your design is likewise crucial to provoking desired emotional responses from users. Take into account that, how they react to color choices depends on factors such as gender, experience, age and culture.

Part of the process of design is understanding the language of typography in order to use it expressively, improve understanding, and communicate more effectively. The diverse elements of typograhpy have specific design intent, communicates certain attributes and has its own personality. Make sure the chosen ones resonate with your material (audicence, goal, conents). There are terms to take into account:

The charactersitics of the target population, the type of content and the goal of the educational material can guide you in your image choice. A good graphic design requires to arrange all the elements in a way that brings them into dialogue with one another. The elements that we layout on a page are mostly text and images. Just as it is important to understand fonts to get the most out of them, it is also important to understand images. It is therefore important to understand what the right type of image is (photo, illustration, drawing, etc), how it combines with the content and how it affects the message. To do so, you always need to consider the context in which the image will be used and make it relate to the other visual elements around it.
