You will be given one minute to take notes on the topic and will be given a pencil and paper to prepare your response, you will then speak on the topic for two minutes. Part 3 In Part 3, you will have a conversation with the IELTS examiner around the topic given in part 2, discussing it in more detail. Part 3 should take approximately 4 to 5 minutes to complete.
IELTS Speaking Assessment Criteria
Fluency & Coherence This criterion examines how fluently you can speak at length, your ability to talk without any pause or hesitation and without any self-correction. It also assesses the efficient use of cohesive devices like pronouns, connectors, conjunctions and more. You must speak in an accent and language that is easily understood by the examiner. Lexical Resource In this criterion, the examiner determines whether you use a wide range of vocabulary or not, try to convey the meaning in different words and use less common vocabulary. The usage of collocations and paraphrasing at proper place are also taken into consideration. You must avoid errors while speaking.
IELTS Speaking Assessment Criteria
Grammatical Range & Accuracy Here, your formation of sentences i.e. sentence structures and proper application of grammar is determined. The structures must be set so accurately that its use sounds natural and appropriate while you talk. Pronunciation Your ability to use intonation (i.e. rise and fall of the voice while speaking) and the way you pronounce any word is taken into account. Your accent must be such that it is clearly understood by the examiner.
IELTS Speaking part 2
In this part of the test you are given a topic card by the examiner and you have to talk about it for two minutes. You will be given a pencil and paper and one minute to prepare your answer. You should talk about the points that are on the card, but you will need to add in extra information otherwise you will probably finish before the time is up.
IELTS Speaking part 2
Let's imagine that you are given this IELTS speaking part 2 question: Describe someone who has had an important influence on your life. You should say:
- Who the person is
- How long you have known him/her
- What qualities this person has
IELTS Speaking part 2
However, if you only talk about the specific questions on the card, you may find that you finish too soon. As long as you keep to the topic, it is ok to talk about other things. Here are two things you can do in the minute you have before you speak to help you find more to say for the IELTS speaking part 2.
IELTS Speaking part 2
1. Use other ‘question’ prompts These are question prompts: Who What When Where How Why
IELTS Speaking part 2
1. Use other ‘question’ prompts When you prepare, write down the other question prompts that are not on the list, and think of things you can say about those as well. For example: When - When did you meet? Where – Where did you meet?
IELTS Speaking part 2
2. Think of a Story You can also tell a story about the person, place, event or thing you are discussing. So in your one minute, think of and note down a quick and preferably interesting story to tell about the topic. You can tell the story anywhere in your IELTS speaking part 2, as long as it fits in.
Example IELTS Speaking Part 2
The person I’m going to talk about today is my teacher from high school. (who) Her name was Miss Chadwick and she taught quite a few subjects at the school. She had been working there for quite a few years when I met her I think. (where) We met for the first time in my English class. (more about ‘who’) I remember this well because she was quite young compared to most of the other teachers in the school so I was surprised that she was a teacher! In fact she looked more like she could be one of the older students!
Example IELTS Speaking Part 2
(How long) So I met her when I was 15, and that was 10 years ago. I don’t actually know her anymore as we lost contact soon after I left the school, but I still remember her very well for several reasons. (What qualities) Firstly, she was very kind. She always treated all the students very well in the class, and I can’t remember her ever shouting at anyone. Also, she had a really good sense of humour. She would make jokes in the class which most of the other teachers never did. The other teachers were very serious all the time. And she made the classes a lot of fun and very interesting, something that I think is very important otherwise you start to get bored. Oh, and also she explained things very well and very clearly. Often teachers are not able to do this in a way that students can understand, especially when it's complicated subjects.
Example IELTS Speaking Part 2
So those are the qualities that she had. (why such an influence) The reason she had such an important influence on me is because I was quite a shy person at school and not very confident, but she helped me to change this. (tell a story) Each year, there was a school play that would be held in front of all the parents, and that year, when I was 15, Miss Chadwick was organizing and directing the play. I really didn't want to be in it because I was so shy, but Miss Chadwick insisted that I take one of the roles, and it was one of the main roles which meant that I would have to do a lot of speaking! I was so nervous. Anyway, I went ahead and did it, and on the night I did really well and really enjoyed it. And that really boosted my confidence and this has helped me to this day. So my teacher Miss Chadwick is the person who has influenced my life and I will never forget her.

IELTS Speaking Examples - Cue Card 1 Describe a present you have given someone. You should say:
- Who you gave it to
- What kind of present it was
- How it compared to other presents you have given
Example IELTS Speaking Part 2
I’m going to talk about a present that I gave to someone. The person that I gave it to was a very good friend of mine at the time. His name was Kaaliya and he came from India. I knew him because we studied together at a language school in Cambridge. Although we were from different backgrounds and cultures, we got on really well and we had the same sense of humour so we became very good friends. The present was a picture that had been painted of the River Cam in Cambridge. It was not so big - maybe around 10 inches by 14 inches, but it was very beautiful. It came in a gold plated frame and the picture had been drawn by a particularly well-known Cambridge artist. It had been signed by this person as well.
Example IELTS Speaking Part 2
It’s the first time I have given this person a present, and I guess it’s quite different from presents that I have given to other people before – I don’t recall ever giving someone a picture actually. If I’m buying for family then I’ll usually buy clothes or maybe some jewelry if it is a special occasion. Normally when I’ve bought something for friends it’s something more jokey so we can have a laugh about it, nothing that serious.
Example IELTS Speaking Part 2
The reason why I decided to give this particular gift is because we had spent a lot of time together in Cambridge and we had had some really fun times punting on the River Cam – that’s obviously why I thought this was an appropriate present. We used to go punting at least once a week, sometimes a couple of times. On one occasion there was a group of about ten of us that went down there, and we spent the whole day sitting by the river in the sun and as usual we went on a boat trip together. We all have a lot of photos to remind us of this great day. So my friend, Kaaliya, is the person that I gave a present to and this was because I felt it would always remind him of the fun times that we had and also of Cambridge.
