Shuar culture
Who are the shuar:
The Shuar community is one of the most numerous groups in the Amazon Region. With a population of more than 35,000 people, a far from exact number because it is an approximate.
Where do they live:
The Shuar nationality is present between the two states: Ecuador and Peru. In our country it is located in the provinces of Morona Santiago, Pastaza and Zamora Chinchipe, with other settlements in Sucumbíos and Orellana in the Amazon and, in the Littoral Region, in Guayas and Esmeraldas.
Traditions:
Amazonian ritual dances that represent war, marriage or gratitude to the land is the repertoire kept by the Shuar dance group "Musap", made up of 11 members who aim to preserve the culture, traditions and customs of their ethnic group.
Celebrations:
The celebration about the “Chonta” is the most important celebration of the Shuar people in the Amazon. It evokes the end of the harvest and is done in gratitude to Pacha Mama, for the annual production of chonta.
Typical clothes:
Traditionally the women's clothing shuar is a dress or karachi and the men's clothing, a skirt or itip a kind of canvas with vertical lines of purple, red, black and white, dyed with vegetables, which are wrapped from the waist to the ankle and supported by a sash.
Religion:
Most of them are Christian, (Catholic) and in many of those cases with indigenous beliefs.
Reflection:
Through this activity I learned more about the cultures of my country (Ecuador) specifically in the Shuar culture, for example I learn about their legacy since they have a great ability to create all kinds of crafts from elements that nature provides them as bird feathers, various types of seeds, fangs, animal bones, and even snake skin. Through this work, I was able to develop the attribute of inquirers because I need to look for diverse information on this topic in order to understand and write it. The skills that I put into practice were: Self-management, thinkers, communication and research.
