VERSUS
ACTIVE VOICE
PASSIVE VOICE
We normally use active voice when we speak. In active sentences we focus on the subject, that is the "doer" of the action expressed by the verb. My grandfather built this house in 1956. My grandfather is the focus of attention in this sentence.
Sometimes the "doer" of the action is not important, or is too obvious or we simply don't know and we want to focus on the "receiver" of the action, that is the object. Then we use the object in the active sentence as the subject in the passive sentence: This house was built by my grandfather in 1956.
