How do we report?

The most common verbs for introducing reported speech are tell and say.

Important changes

- We move the sentence back in time.

- We change pronouns according to the meaning.

-We change time expressions and place according to the meaning.

Reported speech: Time expressions.

Change these sentences to Reported Speech

.- John: “I like this song” → John said that _______________ 2. "The film began at seven o'clock," he said. → He said __________________. 3. Fernanda: “I don’t speak spanish” → Fernanda said _________________. 4. George: “I am going to the beach today” → George said that ___________________. 5. "I never make mistakes," he said. → He said _____________________.

Reported Questions

The most common verb in English to refer to a question is ask. 2. In reported questions, the verb is never in the interrogative form, so we don’t use the auxiliary do/did. - “Where do you work?” I asked - I asked where he worked.

Reported Questions

3. In closed questions (yes/no questions) we use if or whether. - “Is the TV report live?” he asked.  --> He asked if the TV report was live. 4. When we report a question, we make the same changes of tenses, pronouns, places, and time expressions as in reported statements. Direct question: “Why did you do this?” They asked. (past simple) Reported question: They asked why she had done that. (past perfect)

Change these direct questions to Reported Questions

1. Christopher: Do you want to dance? → Christopher asked me __________________. 2. "Where have you spent your money?" she asked him. → She asked him ___________________.___ 3. "Does she know Robert?" he wanted to know. → He wanted to know ____________________. 4. Valentina: Has John arrived? she asked. → Valentina asked ______________________
