Global warming
Greenhouse effect
Climate change:our students' deep research
Climate change: Greenhouse effect
Climate change: Human factors increasing global warming
- Some human activities increase the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere: Burning fossil fuels, e.g. coal, gas and oil - these release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
- Deforestation - trees absorb carbon dioxide during photosynthesis. If they are cut down, there will be higher amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
- Dumping waste in landfill - when the waste decomposes it produces methane.
- Agriculture - agricultural practices lead to the release of nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere.
Effects on economy
Effects on health
But ....what can we do to mitigate climate change effects?

Carbon footprint and Diet
- Your diet is an important part of your carbon footprint.
- Did you know? Buying local and seasonal food will generally result in a lower footprint.
- It depends how it’s produced and packaged, but it is more likely to have a lower environmental footprint.
- Not that buying from abroad is necessarily a bad thing.
- Food grown in a sustainable way and traded fairly can be vital for developing countries.
Carbon Footprint and Travel
Offsetting your flights. Hint: After first cutting your emissions, for example by using a different mode of transport, you could offset the emissions that you are unable to reduce using transparent and recognized certified carbon offsets. Search for Gold Standard offsets.
Carbon Footprint and Energy at Home
Did you know? By turning down your central heating thermostat by just 1°C you could reduce the energy you use for heating by 10%. The same principle applies to air conditioning when it's hot - the less you use it (a warmer home in summer), the more you save (in money and carbon).
How you use energy at home plays a big part in your carbon impact on the world. Did you know? Energy efficiency measures – insulation, double-glazing, low-energy lighting – can cut your energy bills by up to a quarter.
Carbon Footprint and Stuff
- The production process requires massive amounts of energy.
- Hint: Don’t include any second-hand items, just those you bought new.
- The production process for new household appliances (even ‘efficient’ appliances) requires massive amounts of energy and resources.
- Reusing old ones also diverts waste from landfill.
Carbon Footprint and Stuff
The production process requires massive amounts of energy. Hint: About a third of our kitchen and garden waste can be composted and, increasingly, local authorities collect compostable waste which they can process to produce renewable energy. By contrast, if it’s dumped in landfill it turns into methane, which is a big contributor to climate change. The processes for dealing with waste — including landfill and incineration — are very energy-intensive
How big is our environmental footprint? The planet is in crisis - from climate change to the pollution in our oceans and devastation of our forests. It's up to all of us to fix it. Take your first step with the environmental footprint calculator.
Students from Aydin have the smallest Carbon Footprint
How many planets would we need to process our waste if everyone has our way of living?
The air we breathe (Air Quality)
What is air ?
- Air is a mixture of gases, consisting primarily of nitrogen (78 %), oxygen (21 %) and the inert gas argon (0.9 %).
- The remaining 0.1 % is made up mostly of carbon dioxide and the inert "rare gases" such as neon, helium, krypton and xenon.
What is air pollution?
Where do air pollutants come from?
Could we control the air we breathe?
How do we calculate Air Quality Index: AQI?
Which pollutants do we control in the project?
Particle Pollution and Your Health
The air of Tafalla has the lowest level of Particulate Matter (PM)
How can Ozone affect my health?
- If you have asthma, bronchitis, or emphysema, ozone can make your symptoms worse.
- Ozone has also been linked to: Coughing and pain when taking a deep breath
- Lung and throat irritation
- Wheezing and trouble breathing during exercise or outdoor activities
The air in Aydin has the lowest level of Ozone
Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) Pollution
- Breathing air with a high concentration of NO2 can irritate airways in the human respiratory system.
- Such exposures over short periods can aggravate respiratory diseases, particularly asthma, leading to respiratory symptoms (such as coughing, wheezing or difficulty breathing), hospital admissions and visits to emergency rooms.
- Longer exposures to elevated concentrations of NO2 may contribute to the development of asthma and potentially increase susceptibility to respiratory infections.
- People with asthma, as well as children and the elderly are generally at greater risk for the health effects of NO2.
The air of Tafalla has the lowest level of Nitrogen dioxide
Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) Pollution
- The largest source of SO2 in the atmosphere is the burning of fossil fuels by power plants and other industrial facilities. Smaller sources of SO2 emissions include: industrial processes such as extracting metal from ore; natural sources such as volcanoes; and locomotives, ships and other vehicles and heavy equipment that burn fuel with a high sulfur content.
- Short-term exposures to SO2 can harm the human respiratory system and make breathing difficult. People with asthma, particularly children, are sensitive to these effects of SO2.
- SO2 emissions that lead to high concentrations of SO2 in the air generally also lead to the formation of small particles. These particles contribute to particulate matter (PM) pollution. Small particles may penetrate deeply into the lungs and in sufficient quantity can contribute to health problems.
The air of Tafalla has the lowest level of Sulphur dioxide
Carbon Monoxide
- Carbon monoxide is a colorless, nonirritating, odorless, and tasteless gas. It is found in both outdoor and indoor air.
- Affected Organ Systems:
- Cardiovascular (Heart and Blood Vessels)
- Death
- Neurological (Nervous System)
- Respiratory (From the Nose to the Lungs)
The air of Valencia has the lowest level of Carbon monoxide
Students from Tafalla breathe the highest air quality
Researching AQI everyday in the projet from October 2020 to January 2021

Recycling plastic caps
This Christmas students recycled plastic caps to help others. It was a collection of plastic caps to deliver to the Association for the disabled and also to help a child with cerebral palsy to do their treatment.
- Recycle and reuse to save the planet Earth
- Help those who need it most.

Waste management
Half a million tons of plastic waste goes to the Mediterranean every year. And only 9 percent of plastic waste can be recycled. "We say" Let our world not be a plastic waste "!

Keep CO2 levels under control
Helena: Ventilation should keep carbon dioxide concentrations below 1,000 ppm and create indoor air quality conditions that are acceptable to most individuals. Let's open windoows and let the air come in the classroom.

Suggestions for the climate summit on April, 22th
- We can research the air in Funchal and in Kriva Palanka from october to January and include data in the research
- Students from all countries could do the ecofriendly activities suggested by our youngest etwinners from Portugal, take pictures and share them on Twinspace.
- Prepare short presentations of their activities to be shared on April 22th
