START
History
In 1215 King John put his seal on magna carta and agreed to a list of 63 rules. For the first time no one could break the law of the land. In 1220 Simon de Montfort invited rapresentatives to his 1265 parlament. From this point onwards the power to make desicions for the nation passed from the king to Parlament.
Parlament structure
parlament's job is to check what the government does. It's made up in 3 parts: the House of Lords, The House of Commons and the Monarch. The House of Commons chamber is where the Members of Parlament (they're 650), MPs, can keep an eye on the government. Each MPs represents a Costituency, areas of U.K. The House of Lords shares the job of making laws with the House of Commons. They're about 800 members and most are "life peers". They're chosen for the experience and knowledge, so they can use they're special skills to look carefully at the laws. Once your chose to be a "life peer" you became a lord or baroness. In the Houe of Lords the are also the "Hereditary peers" who have their position passed on them by their family and some bishops. The Monarch is the Head of the State but it hasn't go real power, It functions are just symbolic.
In the U.K. we live in a democrazy. You can vote in different types of election: general, local, european. The general election take palace in the U.K. every 5 yeras on the "polling day. People go to "polling station" and they choose who they want to vote. The candidate with the most votes becomes a Constituency
Laws
The Law is a rule we've all agreed to live by. Laws help everyone understand what we must, and must not do. The ideas for new laws are called bills
Before elections candidate need to campaign to try get people to vote for them with: speaking in public discussions, talking to people by visiting houses door to door, and party political broadcast on TV. The candidate also write a list of everything they want to do if they win- this is called a MANIFESTO
