Early 18th century Abraham Darby found a cheaper way to produce cast iron using a coke-fueled furnace. Coke, obtained from the processing of mineral coal, made it possible to replace charcoal, which was lacking at that time. This was a major breakthrough in the production of iron as a raw material for the industrial revolution.

1712 Thomas Newcomen created the steam engine. This machine makes it possible to draw water from the mines and also to transport this water to the towns. Its great success has led to its development throughout Europe.

1764 James Hargreaves created the spinning jenny. This machine made it possible to transform a material into a textile yarn, because at the time, each yarn producer produced only one bobbin of yarn at a time and therefore had difficulty meeting the demand for textiles. It therefore became a means of increasing the supply of yarn.

1779 Samuel Crompton invented the spinning mule improved by the spinning jenny. It is a hydraulically powered spinning machine that can spin from 30 to 1,000 yarns at the same time. It makes it possible to considerably increase the production of yarn, which then becomes abundant and the prices of the products fall.

1770s James Watt improved the steam engine. He improved the machine's efficiency, so that it consumes less energy than Newcomen's, which was very energy-intensive.

1780s Edmund Cartwright created the power loom. It allowed the weaving of wide fabrics through a mass production process. Being almost entirely mechanised, weaving was even faster and cheaper, allowing a worker with little experience and skills to produce the same amount of fabric as a professional craftsman.

1784 Edward Jenner created the first vaccine. He discovered that humans could be protected against smallpox by injecting them with vaccinia, a disease usually associated with smallpox. Jenner is considered to be the father of vaccination

ENGLISH INVENTIONS DURING INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

1803 Rober Fulton created the first steamboat. It is a type of ship generally suitable for navigation on the high seas and is powered by a steam engine. It allows sailing in any weather and reduces the crossing time by almost two thirds.

1850s Henry Bessemer found the first inexpensive process for mass producing steal. This machine is an oxygen converter that has made it possible to refine cast iron in order to produce cheap steel on a large scale.

1804 Richard Trevithick created the first steam locomotive. This locomotive is the first in the history of the railways, and had the peculiarity of being driven by a man walking alongside it. This engineer thus contributed to the birth of the railway.
