Sense of
Smell
Key Points
Smell -
is the special sense through which odors are perceived. It occurs when an stimuli binds to a receptor within the nasal cavity, transmitting a signal through the olfactory system.
Receptors
Nerve Pathway
Organs
Olfactory organs are located above the air pathway in the top of the nasal cavity.
The sense of smell is created by the stimulation of Chemoreceptors which respond to changes in chemical concentrations.
Once the chemoreceptors are stimulated, the impulse goes from O. nerves, O. bulbs, O. tracts, to the limbic system and O. cortex.
Stimulation
Adaptation
Your sense of smell declines by 50% within 1 secenod after stimulation
Olfactory receptors rapidly undergo sensory adaptation
This is what an olfactory recpector looks like!
