Unit 4: Living Things and Habitats
Module 2: Living Things in Habitats
Lesson 1: Local Habitats
Habitats
Living things get what they need from their habitat. A habitat is a place where plants and animals live. A habitat provides the food, water, and space plants and animals need to live and grow, or survive.
Habitats
There are many kinds of habitats. Some are hot and dry. Others have a lot of rain. Some places are cold.
Habitats
Different plants and animals need different kinds of habitats. Some plants need a lot of sunlight. Others grow best with little sunlight. Some plants need a lot of water. Other plants grow best in a dry habitat.
Living Things Use Their Habitats
Animals use the plants living in their habitat for food. Some animals eat other animals that live in the same habitat. Animals also use their habitat for shelter, or a place that gives protection from weather or danger. Some animals dig holes in the ground to stay cool. Others use plants for shelter.
Let's Review!
Answer True or False
_________1- A habitat is a place where plants and animals live. _________2- All the habitats are alike. _________3- Different animals need different kinds of habitats. _________4- Animals can use their habitats for shelter.
Lesson 2: Land Habitats
Woodland Forest
A forest is a large area of land that is covered with trees and bushes. A woodland forest has many trees that lose their leaves each fall. Many kinds of animals live in a woodland forest. Deer, foxes, and black bear live in this habitat. Skunks, rabbits, and squirrels also live there. Birds, mice, and insects live there, too.
Tropical Rain Forest
The trees in a tropical rain forest grow tall and have huge leaves. It rains almost every day in this habitat. Many kinds of animals live in a rain forest. Sloths, birds, and monkeys are some animals that live in the trees. Large animals, such as jaguars, live on the ground.
Hot and Cold Desserts
A desert is a large area of land that gets very little rain. Some deserts are hot during the day and cold at night. Foxes, snakes, and hawks are some animals that live in the hot deserts.
Hot and Cold Desserts
Some deserts are cold all the time. The Artic is a cold desert near the North Pole. Polar bears, moose, seals, and walruses are some animals that live in the Artic.
Grasslands
Grasslands are filled with grasses and wildflowers. Small animals can hide in the grass and shrubs. A lot of plant-eating animals can survive on the grass and leaves of this habitat. This also means that meat-eating animals can hunt for food.
Let's Review!
Classify the animals in their habitats.

Lesson 3: Water Habitats
Oceans
A coral reef is one habitat in the ocean. An ocean is a large body of salt water. Ocean water covers most of Earth. Different animals live in different parts of the ocean. Ocean plants such as seagrass provide food and shelter for some animals.
Oceans
Most ocean animals have body parts that help them swim and stay safe. A squid moves by sucking in water and forcing it out. Sea turtles and clams are protected by shells.
Ponds
A pond is a small body of fresh water. Fresh water has a little or no salt in it. Most animals that live in fresh water cannot live in salt water. Frogs, fish, and turtles eat insects that live in ponds. Snakes live in the grass near ponds. They eat fish and frogs.
Ponds
Pond plants with roots grow near the shore. The stems, leaves, and flowers grow out of the water to get sunlight. Pond animals breathe in different ways. Frogs breathe through their lungs or skin. Fish breath with gills.
River Habitats
A river is a body of fresh water that flows. Trees and other plants grow alongside rivers. Tree branches and roots grow down into the water where small creatures use them for shelter. Many plants and animals live in a river habitat like crayfish, river otters, and snails.
