Characteristis of a Healthy Relationship

SAFETY

RESPECT

SUPPORT

Feeling safe both emotionally and physically. Emotional safety means you feel comfortable being you without fear of being put down. Physical safety means you are not being hurt or pressured into unwanted physical contact.

Caring for you and want what is best for you. Your friends should understand if you can’t hang out because you have to study or spend time with family.

Being accepted and allowed to be who you are. No one should pressure you into doing things you are not comfortable with such as drinking, drugs, or unwanted physical contact

Characteristic of a Healthy Relationship

FAIRNESS & EQUALITY

INDIVIDUALITY

Having an equal say in your relationships. From the activities you do together to the friends you hang out with, you should have equal say in the choices made in your relationships

Feeling like you can be yourself; after all, being an individual is what makes you, you!

Characteristis of a Healthy Relationship

COMMUNICATION

HONESTY & TRUST

ACCEPTANCE

Honesty builds trust. You can’t have a healthy relationship without trust! If you have ever caught your friend or boyfriend or girlfriend in a huge lie, you know that it takes time to rebuild your trust.

Talking about your feelings. Listen to one another and hear each other out. Text messages, Facebook or other messages should be respectful; not mean, hurtful, or inappropriate

Friends or girlfriend/boyfriend accepting you for whom you really are. You shouldn’t have to change who you are or compromise your beliefs to make someone like you.

How do you recognize the signs of an unhealthy relationship?

Here are 6 RED FLAGS:

Does the person:

  • constantly criticize you, your intelligence, and/or your self-worth?
  • act really jealous of you, especially when other people try to talk to you?
  • make threats against you or someone you care about?
  • try to keep you from having any friends, especially friends they might see as potential romantic competition?
  • have problems controlling their temper – even if it’s not directed at you?
  • insist that you do something sexual that you don’t want to do, even when you have told them, “NO.”

Characteristis of an Unhealthy Relationship

MANIPULATION

CRITICISM

People who manipulate use mental distortion and emotional exploitation to influence and control others. Their intent is to have power and control over others to get what they want.

Criticism tends to be devaluing, implying that the critical partner is smarter, more skilled, moral or superior in some way

Characteristis of an Unhealthy Relationship

PRESSURE

THREATENING

Threats are abuse and are considered obvious signs of abuse in a relationship. Threats can be veiled with humor or hidden within an argument, but, if we dig a little deeper, the perpetrator's message is clear: If you don't do what I want, I'll make you regret it.

Asked or forced to do something you are not comfortable with. Pressure can come from family, friends, partners and cyber friends.

How to maintain a healthy relationship?

The ingredients are simple

  • Appreciate each other’s qualities
  • Have good communication
  • Keep realistic expectations
  • Have shared interests
  • Have the ability to face and deal with conflicts together
  • Value yourself and the other person

Why are healthy relationships important?

Being in a good relationship helps us

  • Know ourselves
  • Develop as a person
  • Grow emotionally
  • Communicate and maintain meaningful bonds with other people
  • Have fun!

Remember:

  • A healthy relationship starts with how you feel about yourself.
  • Be aware of how media messages can affect how you feel about yourself and your relationships is important.
  • Be true to yourself and keep people in your life who make you feel good.
  • If you are having concerns about a friendship or relationship talk to someone you trust.
