Five Oceans

Animals

Very large like the humpback whale

Medium like dolphins

Small like plankton

It also includes Coral Reefs, a huge variety of marine plants

The Ocean affects the weather, and has been used for trade routs.

We play in the ocean and wonder what can be found in the deep, because we have only explored 5%

Coral Reefs

Their bright vivid colors can be seen in tropical ocean waters all around the planet.

Although coral may look like colorful plants, they are made up of tiny animals called polyps.

Polyps are invertebrate animals. They can range from the size of a pin head,

Coral reefs are home to 25% of all marine creatures. Almost as much as in the Rainforest. They are the perfect place for young fish as they grow

Coral reefs get their colors from algae that live in their tissue.

Corals use their tentacles to capture food

When coral becomes stressed because of pollution or other factors, they evict their algae.

Coral bleaching results in revealing their white skeletons

As corals grow, their limestone skeleton form layers, similar to that of trees rings, and keep in them the ocean conditions at the time they were formed

Some coral reefs have grown for thousands or millions of years. This allows scientists to study what the climate of earth may have been like

Coral reefs are sensitive to climate change. They are in danger.

Also the millions of species and people that depend on them

Warming waters because of climate change, result in prolonged coral bleaching that kill coral reefs, or leave them vulnerable to other threats.

Estuaries

.Estuaries, where the river meets the sea

Estuaries are great places for fishing, boating, bird watching, and hiking.

In estuaries you can find beaches, marshes, creeks and streams.

This salty freshwater mix is where live begins, and the nursing ground for 75% of the fish we catch

In Ecuador, our estuaries are called Manglares, or mangroves. Filled with life.
