Types of outlines
Formal
Informal
Things to remember (informal)
- 1. An informal outline has no correct or incorrect format. It does not follow a number scheme or a hierarchical order.
- 2. It helps you organize your idea the best way you want it to. You can draw diagrams, draw ideas within bubbles, make charts, etc.
- 3. As the name implies, a scratch outline only serves as a basis for your formal outline. It is destined to be put in the trash bin after you jot down your ideas, organize and reorganize ideas, and revise it as many times as you want!
General rules formal outlines.
- Items should follow logical order.
- The higher the heading level, the more general the statement.
- Every “A” must be accompanied by a “B”.
- Use either sentences or phrases in your outline, but not both.
- Sentences are followed by periods; phrases are NOT.
- Items must be in parallel structure.
- The outline should be consistent.
