SECOND CONDITIONAL

We use the second conditional to talk about unreal, imaginary or unlikely situations like going on a dream holiday.

If I had a yacht, I would sail away now! But I don't have a yacht and I can't sail away now.

Take notes.

The imaginary or unlikely part begins with if and is in the past simple.

If I had lots of money,... If I were you,... If I had a house on Mars,... If I lived in Antarctica,...

The the possible result of the imaginary situation is made with would + infinitive.

...I would buy a jet. ...I would tell the truth. ...my view would be great. ...I would go fishing a lot.

If I had enough money, I would start travelling around the world today!

Take notes.

We would have lunch outside if it didn't rain.

We would feel better if we ate more healthily.

If you weren't so rude, people would like you more.

In conditionals we have two parts: Condition and result. The result is the main sentence. We use the main sentence to make questions.

*If I had enough sugar, I would make a cake. *Would you make a cake if you had enough sugar? Yes, I would. No, I wouldn't.
