Definition

They are auxiliary verbs that provide additional and specific meaning to the main verb of the sentence. Modal verbs are sometimes referred to as modal auxiliary verbs because they help other verbs.

USES

Modal verbs are used to express ability, permission, assumptions, obligation, possibility and probability.

A few examples are: may, must, can and might since we really don't know what is actually happening but it's clear for the viewers to be able to make predictions and that the modal verbs can help us to convert a prediction to a sentence.
