Maoris are the original people of new zealand.

Origins

Their ancestors were the first people to settle in New Zealand, arriving sometime between 1200 and 1300 AD.

Culture

Māori culture is an important part of daily life in New Zealand. It influences our food, our language, our attitudes, what children learn at school and how the country is governed.

Culture/Language

Te Reo Māori

The Treaty of Waitangi

  • A very important part of Māori culture is the Māori language — Te Reo Māori.
  • Te Reo is an official language in New Zealand, along with English and New Zealand Sign Language.
  • Māori language (Te Reo) has been growing in use in recent years. You will hear Māori words — particularly greetings — used by both Māori and non-Māori.

The Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiriti o Waitangi) is our founding constitutional document. It was signed in 1840 by Māori chiefs (rangatira) and representatives of the British crown when New Zealand first became a colony.

Māori customs

Tatoo

A true work of art drawn on the skin, the tattoo symbolizes a lot of things for Maori culture. Every drawing, every line and every centimetre of tattooed skin is never by chance. The art of tattoo is based on the meaning of the designs and the delicacy of the lines. Method have progressed, but tattoo in Maori culture still has a very special and important meaning. On the body or on the face, a tattoo made in the purest tradition reveals to much of the history and the personality of the one who wears it.

Haka

VIDEO

The haka is a sung dance, a ritual practiced by the Maori during conflicts, demonstrations of protest, ceremonies or friendly competitions to impressed opponents.
