How to write a summary.
What is a summary
Summarizing means giving a short overview of a text’s main points in your own words.
Step I - Reading the text
- Read the text carefully - Highlight keywords/main aspects - Divide the text into parts
Step II - Structure
The length of a summary is about 1/3 of the original text. So keep it short and concise.
Step II - Structure
Introduction - Write an introductory sentence including:
type of the text
name of the author
topic of the text
Step II - Structure
Main part - summarize the original text by
using your highlighted keywords
only including relevant information
BUT...
Take care of the language!
always use the present tense
use your own words, no citation
use formal language
Take care of the language!
Don't use present progressive
Don't give your opinion
Don't analyse the text
Now start writing your summary!
Useful words and phrases: Introduction: the article/story/extract from the novel,...written by... deals with/is about/The author of ....talks about... Main part: The author believes/states/points out The article/story illustrates the problem/ topic of...
