SECTION 3

DISCOVERY

LOCATION

The site was discovered in 1991 under the medieval village of the same name, located at an altitude of 1,171 m. It is based on a basalt flow dating back 1.8 million years. Excavated by an international team including the Georgian scientist David Lordkipanidze with the support of the Georgian Academy of Sciences in cooperation with the Central Roman-Germanic Museum. A first human mandible was discovered in 1991, followed by five skulls from 1999 to 2005.

SECTION 4

HOMO GEORGICUS

HOMO GEORGICUS

The ancient human fossils discovered in Dmanissi from 1991 to 2005 have been attributed to a new species called Homo georgicus, whose status is still under discussion. 5 skulls, 4 mandibles, and numerous human bones have been discovered, themselves dated 1.77 million years ago. They are the oldest human fossils discovered to date outside the African continent. Homo georgicus could be the ancestor of the Asian Homo erectus, with whom it shares certain morphological traits.
