Specific phobia is an intense, irrational fear of something that poses little or no actual danger.

variations of specific phobias

Common forms of specific phobias are: • Animal phobias (A.K.A 'zoophobia'), which affect a person based on facing an animal (e.g. dogs). • Environmental phobias, which involve a irrational fear of being in a specific natural event (e.g. heights). • Situational phobias, which make someone fear being in a particular situation (e.g. closed spaces). • Bodily phobias, which include severe fears of bodily functions (e.g. vomit, blood).

complex phobias

noun

Complex phobias are known to be disruptive or creating a more disabling impact on life when compared to specific phobias. These phobias mostly develop during adulthood and are associated with a deep-rooted fear about a certain situation or circumstance.

variations of specific phobias

Hence the name, complex phobias involve much more understanding. The main two complex phobias are agoraphobia and social phobia, also known as social anxiety disorder. Agoraphobia is the severe fear of being placed into a situation where escape may be difficult. Social phobia, on the other hand, causes extreme fear in social settings.

how can these forms of anxiety affect someone?

Specific phobias and complex phobias can heavily affect a person's mental wellbeing, connection to reality, trust in others and oneself, and will to get through daily life. People with emetophobia and germophobia may have had their fears heavily exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and constant fearmongering of the governments leading our countries based on germs and illness. People with social phobia may struggle with the idea of having to constantly contribute to online lessons, whether that be through microphone or camera usage.
