Multiple choice questions

There are three different types of MCQ question. You will either have to:

  • choose one answer out of four options
  • choose two answers out of five options
  • choose three answers out of six options
This question type requires scanning for specific information as well as understanding information in the passage, as you will have to either complete a sentence or answer a question.

How to Answer Multiple Choice Questions

What to do?

  • Read the questions first, underline key words, and scan for information.
  • Remember that answers will most likely come in order.
  • Remember to use Process of Elimination.
  • Make marks in your passage as to where you’ve found various answers.
  • Skip a question if it is difficult and move on. Then, you should be able to better locate the answer to a difficult question in the text, since it will most likely be between some of your marked information.

How to Answer Multiple Choice Questions

What not to do? Do not read the entire passage. As a general rule for the Reading section, it is not necessary and actually time-restrictive to read the entire passage, word for word. Be sure to use the scanning technique, first and foremost, and then the skimming technique as necessary. Some test takers believe that reading the entire passage is helpful since there are many answer options in questions, but it is actually best to devote your time to the questions at hand and use your time wisely with POE. Do not forget to use POE. Even if a question is very difficult, you can use POE to narrow down your options. With this in mind, do not leave anything blank. By using POE, you can increase your chances of getting the question correct, even if it’s just a guess.

First test to predict Alzheimer's The world's first blood test to predict Alzheimer's disease before symptoms occur has been developed. The test identifies 10 chemicals in the blood associated with the disease two to three years before symptoms start, but it might be able to predict Alzheimer's decades earlier. Globally, 35 million people are living with Alzheimer's. It is characterised by a toic build up of amyloid and tau proteins in the brain, which destroys the neurons. Several blood tests can diagnose the disease, but until now, none has had the sensitivity to predict its onset. But with no treatments available, would anyone want to take these tests? Mapstone says "In my experience, the majority of people are very interested to know whether they will get Alzheimer's. They believe that knowledge is power - particularly when it comes to your own health. We may not have any therapy yet but there are things we can do - we can get our financial and legal affairs in order, plan for future care, and inform family members."

Topic - Food and cooking: Q. What sorts of food do you like eating most? [Why?] Q. Who normally does the cooking in your home? Q. Do you watch cookery programmes on TV? [Why/Why not?] Q. In general, do you prefer eating out or eating at home? [Why?]

Q. What sorts of food do you like eating most? [Why?]

Answer: I prefer homemade food and a fan of my mother's recipe. She is an amazing cook and I always enjoy her cooking. Whenever we go to a restaurant, we like to order Chinese menus. Apart from that, I like buttered popcorn, pizza, Indian Masala dosa, Mexican Tacos, doughnuts and sandwich - a mixture of many foreign food items actually.

Q. Who normally does the cooking in your home?

Answer: My mother does the cooking in our house and as I have said, she is a magnificent cook. I often compliment her and inspire her to start a restaurant in the city and she always laughs hearing this. Sometimes, my elder sister Emma assists my mother in the kitchen. I, on the contrary, in charge of the grocery and daily shopping.

Q. Do you watch cookery programmes on TV? [Why/Why not?]

Answer: Not much, I would say. I am not a big fan of TV programmes and mostly watch movies on my laptop. Once in a while, I watch programmes related to travel and cooking and 'Hell's Kitchen', 'Iron Chef' and 30 'Minute Meals' are my favourite.

Q. In general, do you prefer eating out or eating at home? [Why?]

Answer: I like to eat at home. Homemade food has better food value and offers a wide range of choices. It is more hygienic and less expensive. However, we like to eat at a restaurant whenever we have special occasions to celebrate. As dining out in a restaurant offers my mom plenty of time to socialise rather than getting stuck in the kitchen, my father and I often insist her to go to an eatery on occasions like wedding anniversaries and birthdays.
