Plants phototropism and geotropism

Phototropism is a response to the stimulus of light, whereas geotropism (also called gravitropism) is a response to the stimulus of gravity.

Plants respond to gravity

Their roots respond positively, growing down, into the soil, and their stems respond negatively, growing upward, to reach the sunlight.

But how do plants sense gravity ?

Gravity sensing in plants occurs in cells called statocytes which are located in the shoot endodermis and in the central root cap.

Statocytes and Statolith

Statocytes cells contain in their cytoplasm starch-filled plastids called statoliths (or Amyloplast).

Statolith

The statolith (or Amyloplast) position depends on the direction of gravity.

Chemotaxis

Bacterial chemotaxis is the movement towards environments that contain higher concentrations of beneficial, or lower concentrations of toxic, chemicals. By movint its flagella, E.coli has the ability to move rapidly towards attractants and away from repellents.

Bacteria must be able to respond to a changing environment, and one way to respond is to move. The ability to sense changes in the environment and quickly respond to them is essential to the cell's life

Bacteria such as Escherichia coli has a flagella that moves as a sequence of smooth-swimming runs and intermittent tumbles.

The chemotaxis sensory structure (receptor) is located at the cell pole.
