Różnica w znaczeniu (past simple i past continuous):
- I played basketball with my friend yesterday.
- Yesterday at 10.00 am I was playing basketball with my friend.
- The police officer was stroking his dog.
- The police officer stroked his dog.
I. Czasów past simple i past continuous możemy użyć w jednym zdaniu, gdy jedna czynność przerywa drugą: Czynność która była w trakcie wykonywania - past continuous; Czynność, która ją przerywa - past simple. Do połączenia takich zdań używamy spójników when (gdy, kiedy) oraz while (podczas gdy)
when my friend called me. gdy mój kolega zadzwonił someone knocked at the door. ktoś zapukał do drzwi. when the computer crashed.
1. I was playing the piano Grałem na pianinie 2. While I was having a shower, Podczas gdy brałem prysznic 3. Granny was chatting with Sue
2. Kiedy czynności odbywają się równocześnie, używamy czasu past continuous w obu częściach zdania:
1. While I was playing the piano, Podczas gdy grałem na pianinie, 2. While Tim was watching a film, 3. While mum was cooking,
my friend was dancing. moja koleżanka tańczyła his cat was sleeping. the children were playing in the living room.
3. Kiedy czynności odbywają się jedna PO drugiej, używamy czasu past simple w obu częściach zdania:
1. When I sat on the bench, 2. When I finished my homework, 3. When the robber saw the police officer,
I realised it was dirty. I went to sleep. he started to run.
