THE RENAISSANCE

After the Middle Age. Revival of Classical learning and rebirth after a long period of decline. Discoveries such as printing, paper, the compass, and gun-powder. During that period one ideology took hold consistently, the humanism. Humanism had several significant features. The most important is that it took human nature as its subject. We took in consideration the Renaissance in two Countries: Italy and England

ENGLISH RENAISSANCE

Renaissance in England arrived later than Italy, around 16th Century. English Renaissance concerned mainly about literature and not about Art and Architecture. English authors were humanists and they were fascinated by ethics, religion and education.

Thomas More and John Colet were the most prominent English Humanists, they were linked with Erasmus of Rotterdam, a Dutch Humanist. More took inspiration from him when he published Utopia, where he disparaged English ethics just like Erasmus did to medieval scholasticism and ecclesiastical abuses.

English literature during this period was all about three types of writing methods: Theatre (biggest author W. Shakespeare), Poetry and Prose.

QUEEN ELIZABETH

Because of her power, Elizabeth established stability in England so, in that period of success and brightness, the Renaissance had its apex during her reign.

HER REIGN

HER PERSONALITY

She came to the throne after her sister Mary's death.(1558) She went back to Anglican Church, tolerated Protestants (Act of Supremacy), and she tried to unify the Church(Act of Uniformity), with whom she imposed English religious rules and principles but including some old Catholic values. Her biggest rival was her cousin Mary, Queen of Scots, because she pretended the throne. Mary did everything to remove Elizabeth from the throne but, after she tried to kill the Queen, she was executed.

She was a very cultured woman: -she had the best education -she spoke 6 languages -she knew rhetoric, philosophy, and theology She had a lot of admirers, but she never married any of them because she didn’t want any type of alliances with someone who didn't deserve it and because she swore allegiance to her country. For that motivation, she is also called 'Virgin Queen'. She usually presented herself as a sort of divinity, Gloriana, an immortal goddess.

THE WAR AGAINST SPANISH ARMADA

For that reason English troops were nervous. But something happened: with all of her audacity, Elizabeth took a speech to the troops saying that she would be among them during the war, demonstrating that she was a citizen like they were. With that speech she proved to skeptics that it didn't matter she was a woman, and also gave full confidence to her soldiers, to make them more self-confident.

In 1588 the Spanish Armada fleet attacked English maritime power. That happened: -because of Mary's murder -because of England alliances with Spanish enemies.

In that period, Spanish Armada was an invincible fleet of 130 ships. So winning them was almost impossible.

The impact was amazing: -England won the war -Elizabeth showed that she was a loyal leader ready for everything to sacrifice her self for the country.

ITALIAN RENAISSANCE

The place where the Renaissance was born is Italy. The development of the Renaissance-Humanist trend in Italy included all fields: literature, art, and architecture. Humanism in Italy put the image of the man in the center of the arts. The Statesmen were the most interested in this type of art, so they wanted more artworks as possible. Mainly art and architecture have drawn the attention of the Statesmen of Italian States-Cities, They commissioned buildings, paintings, sculptures, and more to make their image better to the others, to increase art quality in their States, and to increase their personal prestige.

Despite Renaissance in statesmen houses had its peak with art and architecture, literature had a lot of succes.

PETRARCH

Petrarch was an Italian Poet, humanist and scholar. With his masterpiece "Il Canzionere" he anticipated the Italian Renaissance Literature Spirit. He was the first to use the Sonnet (2 triplets & 2 quatrains) but, above all, he started to build the idea of the representation of love in Renaissance: the woman is idealized, distant from the poet but he love her forever, despite being hopeless.

L.ARIOSTO

Ariosto was another renaissance-humanist author. He is known for putting humans in a sense of potentiality and strengthen, he was the first to use the word Humanist in the art-literature field. His biggest work was the Orlando Furioso It consist in 46 cantos and it was written in octave and hendecasyllable. There isn’t a single plot, the three main plots of the poem are Orlando’s love for Angelica, the war between Charlemagne and the Saracens and the love between Ruggiero and Bradamante.
