FIVE STAGES OF TEAM DEVELOPMENT

Bruce Tuckman (1965)

Adjourning

The team's goals have been accomplished, and the focus is on wrapping up final tasks.

Performing

Consensus and collaboration is established and the team is mature. There is a clear structure, and members are committed to the mission and goals. Problems are dealt with constructively.

Norming

Unity emerges if a team can survive the storming phase. Consensus develops on individual roles. Team performance increases as the group focuses on team goals. Disagreements can slide team back into storming.

Storming

The most critical (and difficult) stage to pass through. Conflicting personalities can emerge and performance may decrease. Goals may be disagreed upon, and cliques may form. Members must work to overcome obstacles. Overall failure of the project can be due to a failure to get through this stage.

FORMING

Orientation period; team members get acquainted. Uncertainty is high and people are looking for leadership. Everyone asks questions such as: "what does the team offer me?" "what is expected of me?". This is the getting to know you phase.
