The Rwanda Genocide

100 Days of Horror & Slaughter

Whenever, brtual genocides and mass murders are covered almost no one seems to mention the Rwanda Genocide. Maybe its because the Rwanda Genocide happened less than 25 years ago or because the U.N and Western Governments don't want to express that they messed up. Anywho, the Rwanda Genocide saw the murders of over 800,00 people. While there is a lot to the story the gist is that in Rwanda the majority of people are Hutus while there is a minority of Tutsi. At that time, Rwanda was being controlled by a Hutus government whose president's plane was shot down. The Hutus blamed the Tutsi who were currently rebelling and the Hutu extremists arranged a archaic plan to extreminate every Tutsi in Rwanda. In these 100 days of horror husbands murdered their Tutsi wives, thousands of Tutsi women were enslaved and systematic murder of children and men was committed. It really pains me to see how, even in this day and age we still have genocides and inhumane murder machines. Turns out, humanity has not learned.

This article, more than any other, saddened me because of how completely true it is. While I did sympathize with all those who were affected by the different tragedies throughout time, with this article, I am able to empathize with it because this has happened to me. At the start of our Holocaust unit we watched a Infographical Video about the number of deaths that occurred in World War 11. Although I am not proud of admitting it, I was emotionally detached from the video because all those deaths were just a number to me. There was no symbalance of a human being behind those numbers. But when I read "Night" I cannot tell you how much I bawled my eyes out. The deep and personalized experiences of Eliezer were easy to understand and connect with. This article beautifully explains how human psychology is the way it is and affects me because of just how true it is.

Why is a single death more meaningful than a thousand ?

Cuban Refugees

The Cuban Crisis

What makes Cuban Refugees more significant than others are there proximity to America. Cuban immigrants have the change for a new life, to live the American Dream. However, America only used to offer Cuban immigrants visas because of their rivalry with Castro's government. Now that relations between the two are much better this means that Cubans are not able to obtain US citizenships as easily as before. If I am to be truly honest, the Cuban Refugee crisis didn't stand out to me that much. While access to freedom of speech, clean water and food is important, when you've just researched the Holocaust and Rwanda Genocide it pales by comparison. The situation in Cuba definitely needs to improve but since this presentation is about my emotions and personal feelings, I must add that the Cuban Crisis seems shallow compared to millions of deaths.

Apartheid in South Africa

Apartheid was a system in South Africa was a series of laws, legislation and practices created by the white citizens of South Africa to segregate themselves from the non-whites. The non-whites thus lived in separate areas from the whites and suffered many grave injustices. Non-whites suffered under apartheid not even being allowed to come near designated "whites only" places. Furthermore, non-whites which were a huge majority in South Africa were only designated 20% of the land.

President De Klerk

What really surprised me when I read through History.com's article on apartheid was President De Klerk. Under apartheid he had many special benefits and was living a very comfortable life under the system of injustice. Yet, he still worked with Nelson Mandela to reform the system that benefited him. This really made an impact on me and made me realize of the kindness that is still there in this world.

Malala's Yousafzai

I tell my story not because it is unique, but because it is the story of many girls"

This Quote

Truly said it all. Malala was shot in the heat, denied the opportunity to live because she wanted to experience what it was to truly live, and by that i mean live with knowledge. Denying someone an education might be worse than denying them their life because a life is worthless and unmeaningfull unless you understand it through education.
